Background Alzheimer’s Disease (AD) is the most common type of dementia. AD is initially presented as short term memory loss, forgetfulness, and decrease ability to learn and retain new information. It is a slow and progressive disease. There are two types of AD, sporadic AD which is more common in patients who are 65 or older and familial AD. Amyloid precursor protein, presenilin-1 and presenilin-2 mutations are associated familial AD. Causes A cholesterol transport protein Apolipoprotein E is linked to the development of AD. Risk factors associated with AD are advanced age, family history. Possible risk factors are female sex, low education level, and head injury. Factors that are possible protective from AD: estrogen replacement therapy, and NSAID. Goal for therapy Collaboration with multidisciplinary team is necessary to maintain patient’s independence, quality of life, decrease treatment adverse events. Treatment Donepezil, Tacrine, Rivastigmine and Glantamine are the four medications within the cholinesterase inhibitors (CI). CI is indicated in mild to moderate AD. These medications are not to cure but only to slow the progression of the disease process, which involves cognitive, functional, and behavioral aspects of AD. It has also shown that these medication can decrease apathy, psychosis, anxiety, depression, and agitation.
